Going for gold

Turmeric, this beautiful golden spice, has sat at the back of my spice cupboard, behind  the ground ginger and cumin, probably since a failed attempt to add some colour to a vegetarian curry.

It’s only now, that its a foodie buzzword, that I have learnt of its amazing properties. I’ve learnt that it is arguably one of the most significant spices for better health. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric which is said to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is also an antioxidant, amongst many other impressive claims.

I’m not a huge fan of supplements, I like real food too much, so I’ve been experimenting with ways to introduce this wonderful spice into my diet, hoping to reap the benefits. Now that turmeric is on my radar, I’ve noticed ‘turmeric lattes’ at a number of fashion-forward coffee shops. The first time I tried one was at the Modern Baker in Summertown, Oxford…made with almond milk and remarkably delicious.

A turmeric tea or latte is un-likely to feature to often on the blackboard of my usual cycling pit-stops, however I have discovered the perfect solution. The Modern Bakers’ Golden Turmeric and Honey Biscuits. Quick and easy to make, they are free of refined sugars, and include black pepper, which is said to help the body absorb the beneficial curcumin in the turmeric.  I’m delighted with these portable healthy treats, which are made with nuts and honey so provide good energy … they’re also great dunked in coffee, should you choose to take a sneaky bite outside the coffee shop.

  1. I throw in a teaspoon of turmeric and veggie or chicken broth when I make yellow rice. Gives it nice color and a little bit of flavor. I’ll definitely try those biscuits!

  2. I’ve been struggling to find more interesting ways to use turmeric because I honestly can’t stand the taste of it! I always put it in curries and then overpower it with Garam Masala, and as much as I’d love to drink it in a latte, I can’t think of anything worse!

I did discover that when added to a green smoothie (banana, spinach, cucumber, spirulina, flax, turmeric and water), it gave a nice depth of flavour without actually tasting it.

I’d be curious to give these a try… I just need to find a way of subbing the honey. I’m off refined sugars AND syrups!

    Thanks for posting!

      1. Yeah, I’m avoiding juices as well. Basically I’m only having fructose that comes in the original fruit package!

I’m quite happy using it in curries so this is a good way to continue I think. I do like the look of these biscuits though 🙂
